Discovering Farmshare Austin: A Truly Incredible Vegetables Experience
Two weeks ago, I had the privilege of visiting Farmshare Austin for a special sponsors' event that included a farm-to-table lunch and harvesting fresh vegetables. Having visited many farms in Texas, I can confidently say Farmshare Austin stands out in every way.
The quality of their produce is unmatched—vibrant, flavorful, and picture-perfect. Beyond the stunning vegetables, what impressed me most was the dedication and warmth of their team. Every member was eager to share their knowledge, assist with harvesting, and make the experience truly memorable.
Farmshare Austin is more than a farm; it’s a hub of innovation and community. Their slogan, “We grow farmers,” reflects their mission to cultivate not just crops but also opportunities. They’re making incredible strides with initiatives like their Food Rx program, which highlights food as medicine, and the upcoming launch of their collaborative incubator in 2025.
Wandering the rain-kissed fields before the event began was a peaceful moment I’ll always cherish. Later, the vibrant energy of the event, meeting farmers and like-minded farm sponsors, and celebrating the harvest made it unforgettable. (Fun moment: I picked the largest cauliflower of the day, and it became the star of the event!)
Farmshare Austin isn’t just a farm; it’s a movement, and I’m so inspired by the work they’re doing. Check them out—you won’t be disappointed!
Back at home, with my treasures, I want simple flavorful way to cook them. Don't you? Let's start with that beautiful cauliflower.
In this recipe, we’ll walk through how to steam and caramelize cauliflower in the same frying pan—no blanching necessary. It’s a method inspired by how you’d make potstickers, but adapted for your favorite cruciferous veggie. Best of all, it’s quick, convenient, and helps you minimize cleanup—perfect for busy weeknights or anyone who wants a healthy meal in a snap.
Why Cook Cauliflower This Way?
No Blanching Required: Skip the extra pot of boiling water.
Minimal Cleanup: Only one frying pan to wash.
Better Texture & Flavor: The cauliflower steams in its own moisture, then caramelizes for a golden-brown finish.
Flexible Seasoning: Top with chili oil, a squeeze of lemon, or your favorite sauce.
Step-by-Step: From Steam to Caramelization
Prep the Cauliflower
Rinse your cauliflower and pat it dry.
Slice each floret in half so you get a flat surface. This is key to achieving that beautiful golden-brown color when caramelizing.
Steam in the Pan
Heat a bit of oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
Add your cauliflower florets, flat side down.
Season, cover with a lid and let the cauliflower steam in its own moisture for about 5–7 minutes.
Check occasionally to ensure it doesn’t burn; add a splash of water (vegetable or chicken stock!) if the pan looks too dry.
Caramelize
Once the cauliflower is tender and most moisture has evaporated, remove the lid.
Let the florets cook uncovered for another 3–5 minutes, or until you see that rich, golden color on the flat side.
Flip each piece if desired, to caramelize on the other sides as well.
Finish & Flavor
Transfer your cooked cauliflower (which I like to call Golden Trees) into a serving bowl.
Drizzle with your favorite chili oil for a spicy crunch. Or try a squeeze of lemon juice, a sprinkle of fresh herbs, or a dash of grated cheese—make it your own!
Why I Call Them “Golden Trees”
When you slice the florets in half and caramelize them, the tops really do look like little golden trees. Plus, it sounds a lot more fun than just “cauliflower florets!”
Tips & Variations
Spice It Up: Add chili flakes, garlic powder, or smoked paprika for extra flavor.
Go Saucy: Try drizzling peanut sauce, teriyaki, or even a dollop of pesto.
Make It a Meal: Serve alongside rice or noodles, or toss in some chickpeas for added protein.
The Bottom Line
This no-fuss method of cooking cauliflower in a single pan is a game-changer—especially if you’re after minimal cleanup and maximum flavor. Whether you’re prepping a quick weeknight dinner or looking for a healthy side dish, these Golden Trees are sure to impress.
